I was brought to a large makeshift building composed entirely of empty boxes. âInside,â one of the savages said, prodding me with the sharp end of his spear. I walked through the door. Sitting on a throne of printed books was a man shrouded in darkness, lit only by strings of Christmas lights draped from the ceiling.
âWe caught her inside the perimeter, sir.â
âThank you,â the man on the throne said. âStand guard outside. I wish to speak with her in private.â The savages left.
âSo, we finally meetâ¦Mrs. Earl Grey.â
Dammit! He knew my name. âYou canât keep me here. Earl Grey will find you!â
âAnd what?â the man said, still shrouded in darkness. All I could make out was a tight black shirt and jeans; his face was almost entirely hidden. âWill he buy you back? Is that what you think this is, ransom?â
âI have no quarrel with you or your savages. I didnât mean to enter District Thirteen. It was an accident.â
âOr maybe it was fate.â
âFate?â
âDo you believe in fate, Miss Grey?â
âI donât know,â I said. âIâve never thought about it, I guess.â
âHow is that possible? Youâre, what, twenty-three? And youâve never once contemplated the interconnectedness of the universe and your place within it?â
âNot once,â I said. It was true: I just didnât ever think about such things. Maybe if I did, I wouldnât always get myself into such stupid situations.
âYou called us savages,â the man said. âBut do we not resemble learned men?â
âYour âmenâ wear rags and paint their faces. They carry spears. What would you call them?â
âWarriors.â
âWarriors? In what? What âwarâ are they fighting?â
âWe are fighting for the future of publishing. My men are all ex-Amazon employees, recruited to the cause.â The man stepped down off his throne and walked slowly toward me. I didnât flinch. What could I do? My arms were still bound behind my back, and the door was guarded. When the man was just two feet from my face, I could make out his visage finally: the black turtleneck sweater, the thin-rimmed glasses, the scruffy facial hair and close-cropped hairâ¦.
âElvis Presley!â I said.
âWhat? No, no, no. Steve Jobs.â
âWho?â
âCo-founder and ex-CEO of Apple? The inventor of that iPhone you probably carry?â
âDoesnât ring a bell.â
âHow is that even possible? Iâm Steve Jobs. Ainât nobody who donât know who Steve Jobs is.â
âSorry,â I said. âI like my iPhone, though.â
âDamn straight you do,â he said. âI still canât believe you arenât astonished to see me alive.â
âSee, thatâs why I thought you were Elvis,â I tried to explain. âMost dead white guys look the same to me.â
He shook his head. âIâm not dead. Just in hiding, training an army to one day retake the future of publishingâand, by extension, the future of the worldâfrom Jeff Bezos. The only way to do that is by using his own people against him. Itâs the ultimate inside job.â
âDid you invent the iPad too?â
âWhat?â
âDid you invent the iPaââ
âI heard your question. Didnât you hear anything I just said? I just explained my big, bad master plan to you, and youâre asking if I invented the iPad?â
I nodded.
